p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Pre-visualization

When I go out to take photos I try to see pictures in my head before even lifting the camera to my eye. Most of my best compositions are created this way. Sometimes it takes me years to create a photo I have in my head and sometimes it is a matter of minutes or even seconds. As a nature and wildlife photographer this can be quite challenging as it may involve a rare or fast moving creature. This challenge is one of the things makes wildlife photography exciting for me. When I photograph landscapes it can be incredibly slow as I take my time tweaking everything and I miss the adrenalin rush of photographing a fleeing moment. When attempting to photograph a pre-visualized image, sometimes things happen that I was not expecting and I trip the shutter to capture an image with a little more to it than I imagined. I did not expect the oystercatcher to tilt it’s head in the second photo or to find the little oystercatcher in the background of the approaching black skimmer (#7).

It's a technique I really need to work on more. I really like the symmetry in that first shot, but enjoy the 5th one as well. I certainly miss those sandy beaches at times.

A really terrific set, Morris.
In the first image, I'm amused that most of the oystercatchers have their beaks tucked in- yet the skimmers are facing the wind.
Are skimmers tougher than oystercatchers?

Quality work very well thought out and executed Morris.

I like the blowing sand element in several of these images... #7 is a great perspective.
I also like #1 a lot... just a thought... I would be tempted to crop out the sky.

cool stuff morris. i think #7 is really cool. it kinda gives a fun and distorted view of how big the bird is. he looks enormous in this shot, and the tiny oystercatcher helps to reinforce this. very nice!

great pre-visualization, Morris,
Shooting wildlife, that pre-visualization can be just fraction of a second. the ability to "see" what is coming--you call it pre-visualization--is so important and essential for a successful trip.
