This will be a little different from what most of you see. The forum seems to have a heavy bias towards things to the western US. And I have to admit, the western US and the PNW are truly beautiful. I even think I saw someone mention that it is difficult to get good scenic pictures in Florida. Kinda threw down the gauntlet on that one.
And, to be honest, I find myself wanting to travel to take pictures. But after that challenge, I am going to start forcing myself to try to produce some pictures closer to home. Ft. Pickens is a part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and includes natural areas and two forts built on top of each other. The older civil war era fort is somewhat surrounded by newer, I guess WW II era concrete for structures. I may get around to including some of the structures in later images,
But for now, I am focusing on the natural areas. Pensacola was hit pretty hard by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and a lot of the barrier islands in this area were pretty much flattened. Where we once had sand dunes of 15 to 20 feet, we now have a lot of basically flat areas where the storm surge washed over the island. Through a process called liquefaction (think of shaking a jar half filled with sand that is full of water and letting it settle), most of the plant life was uprooted and washed away. But some areas were stronger, and although damaged, were able to better withstand the surge. It is now 9 years later and this is what you will see. This is the first image, I am working on more that I will post later.
As always, I appreciate all C&C. I want to grow in this and I know my PS skill need improving.
