As I am sure many of you know, the government shutdown looks like a possibility as of midnight tonight. If this happens all National Parks would CLOSE.
How will everyone handle this? We have reservations at SkyLodge in Shenandoah National Park in October, so we may need to find a new place to go.
It is (at least somewhat) useful to contact your house representative's office and tell him/her to knock of the political theater and do what republican and democrat controlled legislatures have done under republican and democrat presidents virtually every single time in the past.

I spoke with a ranger this weekend when we stayed at Mt LeConte Lodge in the Smokies. He said the plan was to close the Park so that no permits or reservations would be honored. That includes all campgrounds and loop roads like Cades Cove. US441 would remain open for through traffic as would the Little River Road though stopping within the Park would be prohibited. Seems a bit drastic to me. How would stopping at an overlook cause any issues? Or how could it be enforced? Anyway, I expect the Blue Ridge Parkway would also be gated. Not sure what people out backpacking would be expected to do. How would they know? Seems so silly, just for some political grandstanding.
I'll be staying in the vicinity of Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon the last week of October. If that clown circus in Washington DC still doesn't have their heads pulled out of their collective rear ends by then I'll spend that week roaming the back roads around those national parks, which I was planning to do anyway.

We're the schmucks that put them in there!
In the end, there will be a resolution to this made-up "problem." Pressure from constituents on all sides is likely to encourage them to get to it sooner rather than later.

If I was headed to a NP I surely would do whatever it takes to get to the spot I had my heart set on...
Getting arrested ain't as bad as you think
My concern isn't about getting in trouble for being in the park. However if the spot I had my heart set on was 75 miles inside the gate, and the gate is locked (with no way around), how do you propose I get there?

This is all my fault I am afraid. We drove 750 miles today to Albuquerque and plan to make Durango by noon tomorrow. After a few days around highway 550, we planned to make our way to Zion, the North Rim, and Yosemite. Being my first 14 day trip after 31 years on the job, the Obama karma knows I have elected not to vote for our president either time and now I will be payed back by being locked out of OUR national parks. So, I will set in the room tonight and attempt to come up with an alternate plan that won't be affected by this little side show in Washington.
For those that will have their pay check affected, my thoughts are more for you and your family than on my pictures!
Regards to all,
Greg
