I think I like the first version better. I like the way the negative space works. To me, the second crop feels crowded. Very peaceful and inspirational image!

Thanks AMaji and Paul.
I had parked on the rim overnight- sleeping in my old VW van.
Aiming east, I awakened to the brightness of a lovely pre-dawn sky.
Parka-clad, I set up my tripod and film camera with zoom, and waited for the colors to come.
And they did, filling much of the eastern sky for a few minutes before the sun got too high and washed them out.
