p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Practicing with a Beauty Dish

These are my first shots with a beauty dish. I do not shoot to many portraits, so these are just quick and off the cuff. My daughter was kind enough to let me grab a few shots at a moments notice. I wanted to try an overexposed skin look. I shot them at the correct exposure in camera and then adjusted the RAW file to overexpose. Just wanted to see what others thought about this style of exposure. I like the look, but always appreciate others opinions.

Thanks,

Jeff

Nicely done. The issue for me on shots like this is how much of the pupil do I allow to be covered by the modifier catchlight. Covering part of the iris is OK, but too much missing pupil can be weird looking. I think these are OK in that regard. I like the lighting and hi-key effect. Good job.

(1) is brilliant.

If it were my image, I would clone out the catchlights in this one just to see what it looks like.

#1 is a great high key shot. Really nice. the catch lights don't bother me at all btw. Nice work. What dish did you use?

This is a 22" dish from Paul Buff. Silver dish shot through the diffusion sock. This is my first crack at using it. Shooting with it later this week.

I did the edit (removing catchlights) and it works better for me.

I won't post unless the OP gives permission.

Aloha!

I would love to see your version of the photo. I have not gotten around to trying it yet. I appreciate the input.

Ugh! The no catchlights version makes her eyes look dead, you definitely need some sort of catchlight in order for the eyes to sparkle. Eyes are crystals and should reflect the modifier, toning it down or removing extra bounce cards are acceptable but total removal, is not.

BTW, love #1. Reminds me of old Tri-X days and hot processing

The dish isn't the only beauty. I agree, need the catchlights.
