Encouraged by Dr. Eyelaser, I thought I would share a handful of Pantanal birds. No mammals in this set, in part because it's challenging to sort through hundreds of big cat images, and in part because there's no way my cats match up to Eric's! General order is from common -> uncommon.

Comments/criticisms/advice all appreciated.

Edit: fiddled some more with #1,3,5,6 based on early feedback (thanks to Charlie and Karl).

Nearly ubiquitous but very engaging (Yellow-billed cardinal)

Also very common and very easy to approach (Southern crested caracara)

Probably the same bird photographed by Eric (a relatively tame Toucan)

Pretty common also but a treat for me (Southern Lapwing)

So much of treat that I decided to show a pair!

And one more...a very uncommon Agami Heron. Tends to hide in the shade so had to fiddle quite a bit in post.

PS By the time I had looked at all of these excellent images, I thought all (or most) would profit by some simple tweaks. So I spent three minutes editing the last image, and really liked the results.

Wait a minute...how does Patanal part 1 come after your great capybara images

Ok, now that that bit of housekeeping is over, I must say you got some real beauties there Greg...and yes they are the same birds as Charles lets them out every morning about 7am. Seriously, these are stellar...the cardinal is a really beauty, the ubiquitous caracara is awesome and the heron too cool...I might have seen one but I'm not sure I could tell one small heron from another. I really love those lapwings...that little plume on the top of its head is so neat.
I am really looking forward to see a few more parts including some of your macaws which I am sure will be so much better than mine. And of course the cats....gots to see those jags Greg.

Gosh if #1 isn't similar to a Red Headed WP

What a cool looking bird Greg, and of course a lovely shot showing an excellent exposure and slight BG noise

#2 simply wonderful!
#3 super nice pose. those colors are fantastic, maybe a wee bit boost in the blacks?
#4 nice range of tones and hues on those feathers

#5 compared to the one above it these look slightly magenta perhaps?
#6 would be a great one to bring back down the levels on the BG. Overall I think the bird cold be darker too, it almost looks like you used a flash on this one. You have saved nice details so I will give credit for a nice exposure to start with

Must have been quite dark judging by the ISO 5000/f/4 @ 160th!

Edit was quick and easy in PS. Opened Curves, slid the bottom left slider to the right. Made one other Curves adjust and a quick pass of NR on Bg. The lack of contrast in yours gives a sense of not being as sharp.

Excellent set of images Greg!! Lovely opener. Caracara is a lovely portrait. #3 is the winner in the set for me. Superb color and a great pose! Nice looking lapwings, and nice finish with an all-beak-no-body heron. Very enjoyable!!

Terrific set here Greg, that is a place I've long wished to visit!

No.2 has great detail and I think the pose really works for this type of portrait shot.

No.3 great pose here and terrific colour too.

No.4 and 5 are very nice shots that really show the elegance of these birds.

Looking forward to seeing those big cat shots!
