p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Will a Storm Jacket Pro protect my Nikon from heavy dew?

I want to do some unattended time-lapse photography overnight or in the wee early morning hours of dawn with my D300 or D800. I''m fortunate to live in a place with lots of interesting wildlife that walk through my yard and I wanted to take time-lapse sequences to study their habits.

My chief worry is dew. Not just on the lens - I can buy lens heaters to protect from that - but the whole camera. Dew doesn't fall from the sky like rain - it starts off as water in a gas phase which condenses into a liquid on surfaces. So I'm worried about protecting exposed an even unexposed portions of the camera. Is there any reason why you might not get condensation even on inside surfaces of the camera, thus shortening the life of the electronics or other components?

Storm Jacket claims to protect a camera from dew but since dew starts off as a gas how can it do this? I've been on camping trips where dew has formed inside tents, and I don't mean from my breath.

I cannot provide the answer, but certainly have run into the condensation issue when the camera provides a nice surface for the moist air to release that moisture onto. I'd be curious to here what others who have used the jacket (or something similar) have to day.

Have I ever thought of it? Did you notice the title of the thread?

I don't doubt bags like Kata or Storm Jacket can stop rain because rain just falls out of the sky. The question is whether they can stop dew because dew starts off as water in a gas phase. The reason why you don't get dew inside your house is not because it's blocked by the roof and walls; it's because the temperature is above the dew point - that's why it's called the "dew point".

Another way to phrase this question is: How do outdoor nature photographers protect their expensive gear from condensation when they are working at temperatures close to or below the dew point?

Google "plumbing line heater". One could add a little heat to gently raise the temp of your gear. Even a small light bulb might do it. Just use some kind of cover, ( a cardboard box?) to contain the heat ~ Ron
