Hey everyone,

A week or so ago I posted the first shot in this set and got some great feeback. Jim Fox had wondered what it would look like if the horizon was not center so I have re edited the photos and cropped to have the horizon off center. I am also working on my landscape edits. When I was new into photography I was doing a lot of portraits and the editing is so different. I hope you like the new edit. I am planning to hang this in my office and would like opinions on what one looks best. Thank you very much for taking your time to review these photos.

Hi Butch,
My comments for the 3 series would be:
1) Pleasing image but the subject is the light house. It is white and the brightest eye catching subject. Everything else is dark and have to force to look around.

2) The shadows are opened up and now the subject becomes the rocks under water and the details in the rocks around the light house along with the light house.

3) By cropping up from the bottom you limit the eye to be anchored to the right around the rocks and light house. That leaves a lot of space on the left and balance is lost.

I would chose number 2 between the three. If there was color in the sky and reflecting in the water along with what you have, that would be a bonus and would not mind hanging that in my office. Thanks for sharing.

Nice job with the edit. I much prefer 2 over 3. If it were my image, I would tone down the brightest highlights on the rocks a tad as they are a little distracting to me. I would also try and smooth out the whites in the lighthouse as it looks slightly patchy around the windows. I think the image would be stronger if you make those changes but I still like it as is. Well done.

Agree, its #2, and it needs to be toned down a bit. I would apply gradient circular mask, centering it at the lighthouse, and toning down the rest to a max of about 20%.

Hey Butch,

Interesting work here. It will be quite a transition from portrait shooting to Landscape. I shoot both, and the fun thing is, when I do portraits, I basically get to break all the of the "rules" I have for landscape shots. But with you coming the other way, it's probably going to be a little harder transition. Though by the looks of these, you are well on your way.

With the edits and the lightening up of the shots, is the lighthouse itself. It looks like there is just a bit of haloing around it, and in the white of the lighthouse there are some darker areas, like you used a layer mask that was feathered too large. It's not real bad, but a bit noticable.

As for the cropping. I think you took too much off the bottom. The horizon doesn't have to be exactly at the 1/3rd mark, sometimes it just needs to be off from centered. And then there are times where being centered works best... I would try two different cropping options. For the first, I would crop a little off the top, like halfway from the top to the top of the lighthouse, so maybe crop 1/4 of the sky off. I would try that first because since you lightened it up a bit, I think the foreground underwater rocks add some nice interest to the shot, I would hesitate losing that or much of that. So the other crop option would be to leave the sky alone and to crop off the bottom, but only about half of what you cropped in #3.

As it stands here, #2 is my favorite, but would like to get that lighthouse area touched up. Then play with the crop ideas if you want and see if something balances a bit better for you.

Jim
