Oh, I missed the sunrise from the Great Falls, VA.. so I tried to capture the sunset, yesterday.
Wasn't too bad..

Nice one, looks very realistic (as opposed to efforts to make the foreground look like daytime).

Thanks Stan.
During the sunrise and sunset.. unfortunately the foreground here gets shadowed so it is rather difficult to lighten up.

I know exactly where you're standing!

This seems like one of the best spots to get a shot of the whole falls, but I still haven't found a composition that I'm 100% on. Its an amazing area, but deceptively difficult to photograph without isolating a section. This is a nice image and about as good a comp as I've seen for the full falls, but still something seems to be missing.

Not sure if that's helpful, but its the same thing I've struggled with on multiple trips there.

This is a very nice sunset, indeed, but I don't thinks it's enough to be the key element. Not familiar with this area so I don't know how accessible spots are. Based on Evan's comment it's pretty challenging. Increasing the impact of the falls by getting closer or using a longer lens might be worth a try. I Imagine you shot a vertical and didn't like it. Also wonder what a slower SS might do.

I understand the problem fully, Evan. So we go in and try all different angles to capture. We go down to the river.. we isolate the section to have an intimate view, we use long exposure, and so on..

The sunset clouds scene was not that spectacular this evening.. very short lived.. and getting dark.. and no blue herons.. and I presented one shot from all my trial shots...

Thanks for your comments.

Kee
