Two good interpretations, Bob.
I prefer the B&W because the color is gone- thereby emphasizing the shape and texture.

I personally like the first one with it's subtle colours showing a fading past. Nicely seen and shot.

As soon as I saw the image I thought this one is made for bw. Then I scrolled down and there it was!
Beautiful! The wood grain just begs to be in bw.
