I was in Puerto Rico many years ago and knew of the Coquí frog from that trip. I saw one now and then but usually you just heard them. I had not realized that these tiny...and quite loud frogs had established such a strong population in Hawaii. On a recent quick trip to Hilo I was greeted each evening with the substantial chorus.

Once I determined where and how to find some of these quarter-sized amphibs, I knew I had to get at least one shot. Armed with my 1Ds3 and a 35/1.4 I went looking. I found one cooperative subject that gave me a quick pose. Shot is lit with the LED light on my cell phone. I was pleasantly surprised with the result. Light was a bit on the harsh side, but I got a nice little catchlight

This is about a half-frame crop. My attempts the next evening with some softening material for the light was a bust.

I was expecting your hand in the shot! Cute little critter. Light from the phone worked out ok.

I've heard Coquí in PR since I was a kid but have never ever seen one....so cool to see one here...

This is sweet Mike and the first I've heard of someone using there cell phone photo lighting

shallow dof is really working to focus us right in on this guy! he looks a bit scared and timid, but he sure is cute!

That was the first place I heard them myself. If memory serves me correct the level of sound from the frogs there was no where near as intense as what I heard in Hilo. These little dudes are very loud.

I had no idea either, but I needed something and that's what I had. That little free flashlight app came in quite handy!

Thanks Dorian. They are certainly shy. It was tough to get a decent angle on him but it worked out in the end. This is the only one I found that was cooperative at all.
