In mid-September a group of four photographers spent nine days in the high Sierra back-country of Kings Canyon National Park, with six nights of the time spent in a single location camped at about 11,000' of elevation. Our subjects were quite literally "at our doorsteps" - even if the doorsteps were those of tents - and we were out each morning before dawn and back each evening as night fell. By remaining in a single location for so long we were able to get to know this particular landscape in ways that are not possible when passing through while traveling from A to B, often returning to the same places at different times of day or in different weather.
Here are four photographs of mine from this shoot.
#1 is an "intimate landscape" of still water at the base of a granite cliff along the border of a small, nondescript lake - photographed in morning light reflected from nearby slopes and faces.
#2 is a scene of perhaps my favorite sort of Sierra Nevada terrain, the near-timberline mixture of granite rocks and slabs, small sections of meadow (here golden brown end-of-summer colors), small high elevation trees, and rocky slopes climbing toward summit ridges.
#3 focuses on the cold, blue evening light left after the sun dropped behind a very high ridge to the right of my camera position, leaving only a beam of light passing across the far canyon in the upper right portion of the frame.
#4 is a small scene photographed in an area of dense rocks and slabs and small ponds as the first light touched the peaks on the divide between "my" alpine basin and the next one to the west.

Dan,
Saw this on your blog, waiting for you to post here :P. I like #2 and #3, even though its a great set. I always struggle with compositions when the sun gets just higher past that nice orange sunrise and I tend to give up shooting cause I can't find a composition and don't know what to do with that huge volley of bright light coming. You always find nice patterns in these conditions.

Thanks, Andy and Jason. I'm interested that you both like #2. (Elsewhere #1 has gotten quite a bit of attention.)
While I do the majority of my Sierra shooting in the first and last 2-3 hours of the day, I decided some time ago that since I like the place all day long that it must be possible to make some photographs outside of the early and late hours. There are challenges, primarily the very harsh dynamic contrasts between brilliantly bright sunlit granite and the dark shadows. In fact, that was a challenge in #2 here, which required not only some careful exposure decisions but also some work in post to get it where I wanted it.
About posted image sizes... this is a subject about which there is bound to be some disagreement I'm afraid - there is no answer to that question that will please everyone or satisfy all the contradictory demands. I share relatively small images online - though large enough to look fine on most displays - e.g. laptops, typical desktop monitors, tablets, and smart phones, though they can get lost on 27" photographers' monitors. (Actually, I believe that FM asks that we keep images to 800 pixels on the long side... and these are 600 pixels wide.) But I print large, and I conceive almost all of my photographs as being destined for large prints. I wish I could share print-sized photographs here, but for a variety of reasons that just isn't a practical option. (If you happen to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, there will be several opportunities to see prints in the next month or two.)

Jason, I'll be exhibiting with a group of fellow photographers ("Studio Nocturne") as part of the San Francisco Artspan 2013 "Open Studios" event. We are at the historic Fort Mason Center on the waterfront on Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20. There is a preview opening the night before, October 18 - let me know if you want more info about that. The event is open to the public.
The "Studio Nocturnes" are ostensibly a night photography group, but we all photograph other things as well - and I'll have a variety of prints of subjects ranging from night photography to urban landscapes to natural landscapes. At the moment I'm leaning toward including an 18" x 24" version of the first photograph in this set.
Come on by and say hello! :-)
One of my prints from the 2013 Yosemite Renaissance show will also apparently travel with the show to some venue in the Bay Area later this year, too. In addition, I'll be exhibiting some work in November and December very close to where I live in the South Bay.

Beautiful work Dan. I was wondering when you would post your work from this trip. I know you had mentioned a backpacking trip in another thread. As always, I enjoy the way you find clean and simple compositions that emphasize beautiful light. All are well crafted images, but the light in #3 really grabs my attention the most. It reminds me a bit of the sort of light you see in early American paintings.

Tim:
Thanks, Ben and Tim. Ben, I'm very interested in your comment about that "blue" photograph of the lake in shadow. I'm fascinated by that light, and when I made the photograph I thought about how it wasn't going to be the typical sort of Sierra image... but how it is such a characteristic sort of light in the Sierra experience - what we see/feel every evening as the day comes to an end and the sun slips away and the warm, golden world of the early evening transitions over to that cold, blue world of the oncoming night.
Tim, I'll share info at the blog and also via my G+ and Facebook pages. (I'm "gdanmitchell" on various social media sites, in case you and anyone else might be interested.)

Love these images. Interesting tale also. Really like #1, textures, light and muted colors are one of my targets. #4 also speaks to me. That said don't disparage the others. They are all a cut above.
I have reason to visit a new grand niece in the near future and it looks like "Art Span" will be the target time frame. Hope to see you then.

Dan,
This is really a great set. I got to the first image and was struck and had to pause and ponder the image. You have posted a lot of great photos thru the years but this is one of my favorites, for what that is worth.
4,1, and 2 are my favorites (in that order) and all would make excellent fine art prints.

Really enjoyed looking through this full set. I'm most drawn to #1 and #3, but I like them all. Thanks for posting--looks like the backpacking trip was a photographic success.

Hi Dan,
Number 1 & 4 for me is best. 2 & 3 are very nice but I’m drawn to the other 2. I like detail that I can reach in and touch and number 1 has me playing with the rock layers trying to pop some more layers off the wall. Number 4 has me waving my hand over the grass and enjoying the sun rising on (has no name on topo) and relaxing with some hot chocolate in anticipation of a fun full day wandering in the Sierra’s. I remember reading you like to hear why people like an image when you show them in person.
Seems like we have taken 3 or 4 years off taking 9 day backpacking trips, off trail in the Sierra’s, next year this needs to be corrected!
I need to re-introduce myself as I have realized we meet. I found your card you gave me recently on October 8, 2011 below Parcher’s Resort, We were the only two looking at aspens, snow and cool lighting in the shade. I have a Toyota 4Runner with roof-top-tent. Enjoyed your company and what you share on the board.
