Think my wife (former pro mua) went a little nuts with the makeup.. I need to buy some real lights, speedlights with smallish softboxes are starting to wear thing

Its not the speed lights, it is how you are using them. Before you spend a lot move them off camera and turn them away using the edge of the box would be a start. Avoid direct anything. Even a poster size board used as a bounce will give amazing soft results. If the camera or flash is on auto( focus is OK) then that is another issue itself. Turn to Manual and never look back.

That is a great look. Try facing the flash backwards to bounce off the poster board and see if you can get better lighting for this look. Your wife did a good job.

They aren't on camera, one is on the bg and one is camera left. Nothing on Auto (except AF), smallish octabox camera left is at 1/8 set at 24mm and background which I wanted to blow out was at 1/4. I had sold all most of my studio gear years ago and these Yongnuo speedlights are pretty inconsistent and horrible.

These are a few years old but I think I know enough about lighting to make the determination that these lights suck.

I should've been more specific, but I was agreeing with him about how harsh the light is. They need to be modified in some way. I agree with Jefferies that to some degree, lights are lights. I have a number of different lights, including Einsteins, but I find myself using my $160 LumoPros on location a lot. Didn't mean to insinuate you don't know Diddley about lighting.

Your first shot, baby in pink, in this second set is especially sweet.

Thanks, that was her several years ago.

Agreed lights are lights, but these little fotodiox speedlight softboxes combined with inconsistent lighting from the yongnuous are a pretty bad match. I was simply replying to Jeffries direct light comment. You can clearly see that the speedlight is off camera that shadows are softish hence modified.

These shots (which I agree have harsh lighting) are using modified light (12" Octabox on main light and 10" soft box on bg) and I haven't been able to get any consistent results with them. Nothing wrong with Speedlights as in the past I've gotten good results with 580's, but these chinese made ones are very inconsistent.

your light is too low.. especially in the first one.... the issue here isn't with your flashes...
