p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Crater Lake (B&W)

I am not a frequent poster here, which is a function (unfortunately) of how often I get out and shoot. I definitely need to get out of central Massachusetts more! In fact, I will probably use this forum as a travel guide in the future after seeing so many outstanding images from around the world. Recently, my wife and I visited our daughter in Oregon and had a chance to do some sight-seeing with her. Crater Lake was on our "must see" list and it did not disappoint in terms of "it_really_is_that_blue!!!" I have seen many beautiful color images of this lake (many here in this forum), and why not, the color of the water is truly hard to believe unless you see it for yourself, but I wanted to see how it worked in black and white...so, here are a couple. Let me know if you think it works. If someone begs...I will post the color versions.

Thanks for looking!

Jon

I have to admit, it would never occur to me to make B&W at Crater Lake. These are good, but I have a couple nits. On #1, I'd clone out the small tree top in bottom center. #2 appears a little dark (on my monitor) in the mountains, not much detail showing. You got some great clouds, always important there.

Hey Jon,

By looking at these, I do think you need to get out more too!

#2 is my favorite, I really like that cloud in the shot and how the B&W rendered the scene.

With #1, it's a nice pano view, my one suggestion with it would be to lose the heavy polarization blob in the middle of the sky. Even without a polarizer that's totally natural when shooting wide, but notice how in #2, you have caused the darker polarized area to be in the left corner and gradiating nicely through the sky to the right. You should work something like that in #1. For now, using a layer mask to select just the really dark sky area, feather it at a large radius, and then you can adjust the Shadow recovery to light up the sky there slightly so it blends in with the other portions of the sky better. Just an idea anyway...

Well done! I like both images. I'm a sucker for a good B&W pano!

Technical question: using a polarizer? Seems like you have some strange dark areas in the sky in both , and perhaps some darkness in the water in #1 also...

Thanks very much Stan...I'll take all the nits you can throw at me! Good point on the tree top in the center of #1. I will make that change. Not sure about the darkness in #2, because I am seeing some detail, but I'll play with it and see. This one I will be printing so I want to get it right.

Thanks very much Jim. For #2 I liked the dark water and puffy clouds (I lucked out with the clouds) for contrast and the dappled light on Wizard Island and surrounding rim adds to the overall mood. I have wondered about the polarization blob which I see more than I expected (I thought it was either a problem with the polarizer or my technique). I'll give your suggestion a try with feathering the dark area in #1...again, thanks.

Thanks Paul...yes, I did use a polarizer. As you can see from the previous reply from Jim, I have some work to do to even out the notorious polarization blob. I like the separation of clouds and sky, but the uneven dark areas, I agree, are distracting. I'll post updates when I get a chance.
