p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Drive-In

The Wellfleet Drive-In theatre is located here on Cape Cod and was built in 1957. It is one of the few that remain in the country. I spent a clear evening there earlier this month capturing this shot. I had a devil of a time layering in the much shorter exposure of the screen but I think it came out pretty good in the end. The foreground and sky is a composite of twelve 1 minute exposures stacked in StarStax. I then layered in a short 1/2 second exposure of just the screen.

5D, 16-35 II

Comments welcome.

Hey Chris,

Pretty creative here. I can imagine that was a hard one to blend with the stars.

Chris:

I like what you are doing here. This is a scene that is hard to capture because of the general lack of Drive-In theaters. I would love to see this with longer star trails.

I am not an expert on the night sky. That being said, it looks like you had the Milky Way just to the left of the screen. Unless that is some kind of headlight reflection or swamp gas. If that is the Milky Way, I would be tempted to try this composition again, but this time go for the Milky Way image. It would be great to wait until the Milky Way is positioned directly above the screen. Then do a high iso exposure. If you can capture the Milky Way directly over the screen, I think you would have yourself a "Sci-Fi Double Feature". It would be reminiscent of the campy sci-fi movies from the 1950's that played at drive-ins. Just an idea.

Nice work.

Tex

Thanks guys! In a time when astrophotography/Milky Way images now saturate the net, it is more and more difficult to come up with something unique. Glad you like it!

I don't know, maybe I'm just testy, tonight, but you guys go on and on about how selective color has been done to death, but apparently star trails are forever. Just a thought.
