I took the bike up to Mount Evans yesterday for some hiking and photography. At 14,264 ft, the air is a little thin, there is 60% less oxygen in your lungs at this elevation compared to sea level.

You can't beat the views though.

Chicago Lakes Trail, around 13,000 ft.

It was storming on and off all day. Temperatures were in the 50's, which was pretty nice compared to the high 90's down lower.

In this shot, you can see South Park Basin in the far distance.

Beautiful shots!

What lens did you use on these?

Did you get a sense as to how soon the fall color will arrive? Last year it was very early.

Thanks!

Breathtaking shots! On my screen some of the clouds look blown, any way to pull a liite bit of detail out of them?

60% less oxygen? No wonder I am breathing so hard up at 14,000 feet on Mt Whitney...

You have some cool compositions here, but all of them suffer from the same issue to one degree or another and Phil hit on it, the blown clouds. It looks like in #5 it would be pretty hard as it looks like the sun is pretty close to being behind the clouds, but all of the others making sure to expose your highlights for not blowing would be the best place to start. Bracketing these, shooting once for the sky and once for exposure on the ground would probably be the way you would have to go.

As for views, #2 and 4 are my favorites, though I would lose the people in #2. If they were just standing there looking into the scene it would be different but the one person is walking out of the frame. You don't want that.

Jim

These kinds of vantage shots are my absolute favorite. They are nice and I would love to see this location shot at first light of the day. I have always been jealous that Utah doesn't have any 14ers, we top at at the mid 13's.

CJ, I like how the clouds radiate away from the scene in the last image. Colors look like they are turning. Any goats?

Hi there,

Fantastic captures! I live in Denver and know exactly where these spots are.
Mt Evans is one of my most favorite places. Due to very high altitude, he clouds've never be the same!

Best,
Pramote

Very nice set, but 4 really stands out for me. Excellent leading lines, great mix of colours and good cloud detail.

Beautiful set. I like #4 the most. The composition is the best. Liked #5 too, but I agree about the blown clouds.

Nice views from MT Evans and I like your shot of the Chicago lakes. Hiked down to the lakes from Summit lake many years ago and ended up getting pelted by a mountain hail storm. It was not fun above tree line with the storm and lightning for 20 minutes but the rest of the time was amazing!

I am truly impressed with anyone that can bike up Mt. Evans as I have only driven it and found it hard to breathe. Great shots.

It looks like you had a great trip and some nice photos! There's an app for that called Air Pressure that calculates pressure based on elevation and vice versa. At 14,264, it shows the pressure at 0.58 atm which is 42% less than sea level. I think that's what you meant when you said 60% less. dave
