Looking for some feedback on this one. Changed my processing quite a bit for this shot, experimenting. This is only a beta version, and I'll have to completely redo this one to iron out a few kinks but wanted to know if I'm headed in the right direction I think this one looks much better BIG too.

EDIT:

Another version (still not finished):

Matthew, I love the sky and its reflection. The mountains are just too dark on my monitor, no detail.

Really? Thanks for the feedback. I wonder if that's my monitor or yours because I've got plenty of detail showing. What monitor are you on?

I guess the fact it's only at 1000px is a factor too.

Plenty of detail on my monitor. There is subtle detail with plenty of it. It looks very natural.

The composition and lighting are great. Nice work on a tricky exposure.

Thank you Cody. The lighting from this sunset was unreal. It's hard to see on this small version but there were these beautiful pink reflections of light from the clouds on the mountains to the left that were unreal too. Such a beautiful place.

Hey Matthew,

This looks pretty sweet. Whatever changes you made to your processing are good changes I would say. As far as detail in the mountains go, the subtle detail is very realistic. You certainly don't want the mountains too bright as it will lose its realistic look.

Good job,

Jim

Thanks Jim, I experimented with brighter mountains (I took multiple exposures here) but decided to go with a slightly darker feel to, as you said, keep a realistic look. I think it works better. Thanks for your thoughts.

I like your processing. Wouldn't really change anything. Lift shadows on the mountains and they'd start looking unrealistic.

I think that you are doing a fine job on what looks to be a tricky exposure.

Matthew,
Photo looks great; amazing really.

The detail in the mountains in fantastic. I bet it looks awesome at full size.

My only critique is that I'd tone down that flare just a bit. It really makes the image pop, so I'd definitely keep it, it's just a tad too bright. I like the technique though, I do it all the time.

You should definitely print this one.

I think the overall exposure/blending is perfect in all spots, the right levels of detail while still maintaining a natural brightness difference, etc. However, the flare-y thing on the right is really distracting to me. If there were a sun behind it, I'd be ok with it, but just sitting there all by itself really distracts me.

This is a beautiful image, and I see enough detail in the mountains to make it realistic. As stated above, lightening them any more to bring out more detail will render them less than realistic. I do agree with Matt, the flare on the right is a bit overpowering. Yes, it needs to be there, but I think just a hint of darkening of it should help! This should look wonderful printed really big on metallic!

An updated version with improved sky contrast and colour and reduced the flare's prominence in the shot as per recommendations.

Still not finished with but getting better.

The composition is good, the scenery is good and the exposure is about right (including the shadows). There is clipping in the clouds and you want to try and hide that by keeping the clouds bright right there. The first image is really nice, aside from the glow on the right. Is that a lens smudge or post effect? The second image is pushing the colors a bit too far into the primes, especially around the sun. The yellow should be more white, like the first one and the blue sky is a bit too blue. Try taking the original shot and applying a multiply layer to get the tones in the sky "saturated but natural", then a curves layer to put the midtones where you want. Also, try shifting the midtones a point or two toward the magentas to reduce the overwhelming orange. Still a nice scene! I wouldn't have offered the suggestions if it wasn't Having been there, I love seeing GnP pics.

Awesome. I agree with John's crit. Dynamic range challenges for sure on something like this. I do love the shadow detail. Keep it up! -Mike

I also agree with John. Just personal but I would crop the building out on the left and give the image a touch of perspective distortion correction to fix the fanned trees on the right. Love the colour and mood!
