Haven't been there, only to Kenya and S.A., but one thing is certain......if I intended to go to take pictures it would be on a photo tour, despite the additional cost.
The lodge tours are generally "canned" routes and driving patterns, which is necessarily bad. The problem is that there will be other people you don' t know in the vehicle, and the guide is trying to make them all happy, so you only get a "share" of the happiness.
Worse yet, you will be one of up to 9 (sometimes 10 if its really busy) people in the van or rover, with no room to move around, no room to access your camera gear, and no way to control your photo lighting and angles. This becomes especially true on later afternoon drives and night drives where many of the more popular and larger lodges have started using 20 passenger open trucks to move folks around.
Move vote this past year and for next year has been to choose the best private reserve I can afford and only go for a true photo tour, which puts one photographer per seat row (max of 3 people per vehicle), has the ability to go off road, and are focused on getting you to the animals. Last year my vehicle one day voted to simply follow a cheetah for three hours. You won't get the chance to do that on a "lodge tour."
Best wishes
