A trip to Tanzania in 2005 got me started in photography, and now it is time to go back to Africa. We are planning on going to Zambia in 2014, and would appreciate advice anyone who has been there. We are interested in places to stay, and I am also trying to decide if I should book a dedicated photo tour, vs photographing on the standard game drives that the lodges organize. Preliminary plans are to visit the South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Victoria Falls. Any input is appreciated.

Haven't been there, only to Kenya and S.A., but one thing is certain......if I intended to go to take pictures it would be on a photo tour, despite the additional cost.

The lodge tours are generally "canned" routes and driving patterns, which is necessarily bad. The problem is that there will be other people you don' t know in the vehicle, and the guide is trying to make them all happy, so you only get a "share" of the happiness.

Worse yet, you will be one of up to 9 (sometimes 10 if its really busy) people in the van or rover, with no room to move around, no room to access your camera gear, and no way to control your photo lighting and angles. This becomes especially true on later afternoon drives and night drives where many of the more popular and larger lodges have started using 20 passenger open trucks to move folks around.

Move vote this past year and for next year has been to choose the best private reserve I can afford and only go for a true photo tour, which puts one photographer per seat row (max of 3 people per vehicle), has the ability to go off road, and are focused on getting you to the animals. Last year my vehicle one day voted to simply follow a cheetah for three hours. You won't get the chance to do that on a "lodge tour."

Best wishes

Gene

Thanks Gene, I think we have found a photo tour that is within budget, some can run close to $10,000 per week.

Jack,
I just returned 6 days ago, from a tour that visited Moremi, Khwai, Savuti, and Chobe in Botswana, then visited Victoria Falls and on to South Luangwa in Zambia. So I can offer timely advice. I traveled on a Cheeseman's photo tour. What is the tour and details of what you have located?
