In the outskirts of that historic, magnificent and beautiful city, I came upon these workmen- taking their lunch break.

Interesting that they saw you, didn't seem to mind, but did not mug for the camera. I'm not sure that would happen in the U.S.

True, Bob.
But my style of taking pics of people (when my doing so is completely obvious) takes such matters into consideration- especially in other countries than my own.
Here, as I usually do, I decided the subject would be worth a photograph or three, so I approached the men directly.
Smiling, I raised the camera (not aiming it) as an indication of my intentions.
Contrary to what you may have heard, the vast majority of people (off the tourist trail) in Asian nations do NOT speak or understand English. Certainly not Japanese construction workers.
But they understood my gesture and nodded their okay- so I positioned myself, took a couple of quick shots, smiled and did the little bow that is so common in Japan, said "Arigato" (thank you), and walked away.
99% of the time during my foreign travels- this technique has worked.
Note that I never pose the people, nor ask them to smile. I never use flash.
And within 20-30 seconds the whole thing is done and I'm gone- so I've intruded into their lives to a minimal extent.

Was this shot with a phone? It looks very compressed.

Phone?
Shot with a Canon 35mm film camera with 28-90 zoom lens- before the days of cell phones, and WELL before the days of cell phones having built-in cameras. Probably taken in the 1970s.
I may have straightened it some in my recent processing of the scan.
But your mention of compression befuddles me. I see some distortion at the left and right sides because I was in close and shooting at 28mm. Other than that...

Nice scene Charlie. Well composed. I don't see compression but I do see what seems to be a bright area in the middle - from the sun, I suppose. I like how the roof line seems to encompass them.

Thanks, Jim.
That bright area is probably because of direct sunlight reflecting off a flat part of the temple, PLUS the white smoke rising from their little fire .
