We just got back from a trip to the Outer Banks of NC. While there I was able to get to Pea Island NWR and Alligator River NWR. We stayed in Duck, and I managed to find a few things to shoot there too.
SOME TIMES YOU JUST GET LUCKY.
On day two I was able to get down to PI NWR in the afternoon. It was not the ideal time to shoot, but I wanted to do some scouting and talk to the volunteers at the visitors center. It turned out that the volunteer that day was a pro shooter who worked for UNC as a vidiographer/photographer, and his hobby was shooting wildlife... He told me exactly where to go - but not like Charlie does. The target was a colony of Skimmers with young. He said the light would be perfect for shooting them skimming, and he would be down after he got off at 4PM. So I headed there, and found the colony. They were mostly just sitting in the sand, and not skimming, AND they were back lit - colony to the west, and ocean to the east. I managed a few decent shots while waiting, but it started to rain lightly around 4, and he never showed, and the Skimmers never skimmed before I had to leave.
As always, thanx for looking, and C&C appreciated ~ Ron

I never got close to these guys - Every time I knelt down, they ran off.

The chicks would run around until one of the adults would tap them, then they would stop and assume this position.

They would fly close to check me out, but they were lousy shots - never "got" me.

The adults kept the chicks well away from the barrier, so I never got a good shot.

Checking me out.
