I like the first one, but I'd crop that left side to get rid of that pole or whatever it is and to get him out of the center of the frame.

Good looking young man. Watch the backgrounds when you photograph people. The brightness on the right in the #1 is very distracting. I agree about cropping out the pole on the left. And his right arm is in a very awkward position. For #2 I'd crop the right side almost to his arm. Usually more impact with subject off center. Light on his face is better in #1, kind of blotchy in # 2. You've got a good start.

great advice, thanks! yeah, shadows from under a tree in #2 and totally agree with the tips...I was so tired by the time I posted these, been up all night loading ViewNX2 and trying to figure out how to pp the RAW shots I didn't even consider composition or cropping...was happy as hell I managed to load and process them without losing everything or blowing up my laptop...I got a long way to go...brutal transition...just about said the hell with it and go back to jpegs only...

RAW to TIFF, the 8 bit or 16, then to JPEG, then pixel size, then High Quality or Highest, then crop and oh yeah, what if I want to print it and what size...man my brain hurt, swear I spent one hour on one pic...guess it'll get easier huh? right now I'm clueless, probably oughta' take a course or read a book or something..thought about asking a question here about it all, but my question has 83 parts to it

Better?

Much better. And later you can add a vignette, too. Hey, it does get easier as you do these things more. But there are absolutely great video tutorials available on line from so many sources. Use them.
