i'm not the best with juvenile hummers, but this guy has quite a bit of rufous on his flanks and rump. if this photo was taken in seattle, then i would lean more in the rufous or allen's direction. i'm sure someone else will have some thoughts though. nice shot either way!

Looks like a really nice image, but that is as good an ID as I can provide, aside from the fact it is a hummer.

It's either an Allen's or a female Rufous. They are hard to tell apart.

I lean more toward a female Rufous.

Beautiful shot. I agree it is either a Rufous or Allen's. They are very similar in coloring.

The picture was taken in Western Washington, not far from Seattle where Anna’s are the most common hummingbird followed by Rufous. Two other species are seen in eastern Washington, calliope and black chinned. I think that would rule out Allen’s.

While it could be a Rufous, other images and lighting had me thinking it might be a young Anna’s. The sounds they make and the crazy behavior make me think they are a couple of crazy juvenile Anna’s but I am not an expert by any means.

Thanks all for the kind words and input. I will see if I have another image or two in different light. Amazing how different they can look in different lighting.

Wonderful shot! Not sure of the ID as I have never seen a Anna's. According to Cornell Lab of Ornithology , Anna's do not have rufous coloring .

Thanks for the Female Rufous ID. I had read somewhere that juvenile Anna’s looked similar to Rufous and since I see Anna’s doing the mating dive bomb dance at times, I assumed they had a nest nearby and this is the time of year the young would be active.

Nice to know I get visits from both the Western Washington Hummingbird species.
