If by "Michael," you mean Michael Frye... I'm pretty sure that the longest lens he uses is a 70-200 f/4. (I'm pretty certain that he shoots only this lens and the 17-40 f/4. He is one of the folks I'm thinking of when I occasionally post about who uses what to do landscape.)
But I'm still sticking to my love of what the long lenses can do in certain situations, for picking out small interesting bits of the landscape, for compressing perspective, and for enhancing some effects of mist and haze.
Take care,
Dan
I do mean Michael Frye , and by his account during his workshop, he uses the 70-200 about 90% of the time and 17-40 10%. My association with great photographers is limited to paid, and forum, so I didn't mean to name drop . (he mentions you every now and again on his blog).
I use the 100-400 because I already have it, and since I'm the designated lens schlepper, I'm not keen on adding another white lens to the load. I just meant that I enjoy the telephoto perspective more and more because of the reasons you outlined.
