p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Round about the High Country

We took a trip up to the Yosemite High Country as a last hurrah before school starts up again. The trip out to Greenstone Lake was quite enjoyable, and the water taxi willing to take us back after our 4:15 pre-sunrise hike was even nicer. My wildlife moment was interrupting a 20 deer dinner party on the trail next to Pothole Dome. I turned a corner, and the alpha male wasn't too pleased with me, and bolted up the granite. C&C welcome and appreciated!

Tim

Very nice series. Greenstone Lake is a new one on me.

Really like #1, Tim. Maybe you tried but I wonder what a little saturation or dodge on the "lead in" greens might do.

Thanks all!

Psharvic: I did lighten the greens about a stop, and beyond that it starts to look like a bit much. I also, looked at lightening the whole foreground, but then I lose contrast. I'll play around a bit more

Love the atmosphere in #2 and #5.

That huge herd of deer at Tuolumne is unusual - I haven't seen such a large group before. I also shot them at that end of the meadow a week ago or so. (There's a thread here with a few photos - probably on page 2 by now.)

Looks like you still had a bit of the wildfire smoke, too.

Thanks Dan! Between you and Michael, I find myself using the 100-400 with a much higher frequency. I was there at the end of July, so the fire was definitely still a factor. I didn't notice the smoke until sunrise at Mono (and I ran into someone at the campground who mentioned the fire). It really made for interesting enough conditions to make my printable keeper for the trip. At sunset on the second day, the smoke poured in from the south.

If by "Michael," you mean Michael Frye... I'm pretty sure that the longest lens he uses is a 70-200 f/4. (I'm pretty certain that he shoots only this lens and the 17-40 f/4. He is one of the folks I'm thinking of when I occasionally post about who uses what to do landscape.)

But I'm still sticking to my love of what the long lenses can do in certain situations, for picking out small interesting bits of the landscape, for compressing perspective, and for enhancing some effects of mist and haze.

Take care,

Dan

I do mean Michael Frye , and by his account during his workshop, he uses the 70-200 about 90% of the time and 17-40 10%. My association with great photographers is limited to paid, and forum, so I didn't mean to name drop . (he mentions you every now and again on his blog).

I use the 100-400 because I already have it, and since I'm the designated lens schlepper, I'm not keen on adding another white lens to the load. I just meant that I enjoy the telephoto perspective more and more because of the reasons you outlined.

#1 draws me in, love the rim lighting and form of the mountain range.
#2 gives me that cool rush of wind feel and is shown in the texture of the waters
#3 something special about this one, nothing forced, nothing bold. A good palette of pastels and very nice angular cloud pattern that has a very painterly look to them. My eyes are lifted as I view deeper into this shot.
#4 gosh that is wonderful color to the sky and some very cooperative clouds!
#5 at first glance the water looks ice covered. I don't know this area at all and thought that was snow covering in the BG........silly me

Lovely set, thanks
Karl
