I have visited this spot 3 times prior to making this image. It almost always has people in it. It is a very popular place even though it is very far from the metropolitan areas. One can park fairly close but it requires a 60 ft. decent through the steep canyon. Easy when it's dry but if it is wet It can be tricky. It had just rained when I went. Perfect conditions because if it does not rain for even a day or two the flow can get a tad thin. This time it had the perfect balance. I knew I might get the image I wanted as soon as I headed down when I saw only 4-5 people in the water and in the fall. But they would not move!. Light was fading a bit and just as I was getting impatient I started hearing some nasty thunder. A thunderstorm was close by. I was ready to pack up but when the storm got close everyone started to leave and right then as the last person stepped out of my frame I made three shots. As soon as I packed my gear and closed the zipper on my bag heavy rain started to fall. I was sure I had the shot.
I was a tad nervous working the medium format digital rig right over water (I was standing in about 12" of flowing water) but the shoulder bag was perfect for working in those conditions.
I also include a 100% crop of the image to show the amazing detail present in the 60mp file. (This is a single image capture) This fall is about 40 feet tall and there are a lot of small delicate flows all around it.
#1 is beautiful. #2 Does not do much for me. I want to see more of where the water is going. Glad you got out of the rain before it got your gear. Thanks for sharing.

It is very tough to shoot waterfalls in the tropics. When the sun is out the contrast is just extreme and the clouds are usually in and out since the tradewinds are almost always blowing. I find that it is best to go when there is a good chance of thunderstorms or constant rain and just wait for it to cloud over and shoot between when it's raining. The problem is there a risk for getting the gear wet. I trust lowepro's integrated rain covers now. They have saved my gear quite a few times. Not as rainproof as a pelican but when working alone the pelican's are impractical.
Nice work here, I like your #1 shot. I would be a bit nervous with a camera like yours that close to the water too. Thanks for adding the detail shot in #2, it's great to see the kind of detail you are pulling in from that setup.

Thankfully the Arca with the PhaseOne Back and also the 40mm lens all mounted and ready to shoot fits easily in the lowerpro stealth reporter 300 shoulder bag along with all the filters and accessories. I also use a flipside sport 20L at times. Great bag to work over water with. A lot of times I do not have a rock or ground nearby for putting down a bag and working off of it.
