I can't remember for sure because it was long ago, but I think he was sitting that way because it was comfortable. and his facial expression is the result of the freezing action of a still photograph.
The two were conversing as equals, even though the older man was probably poor- and the other man a businessman on a higher rung of the economic ladder.
In this culture (and India, Pakistan, etc) you are born into a "class," and there you stay forever- no matter how intelligent you are. The opportunities to improve yourself and your "station" are almost non-existent.
That's one reason why there are major Indian populations in other countries.
The "Land of Opportunity" in the US (and a few other countries) cannot be overemphasized- especially when viewed through the eyes of people who live in highly restricted societies.
