When a surfer passes, it's common to hold a paddle-out in their honor. Friends and family paddle their boards into a circle beyond the surf line where the departed surfer is remembered, prayers are said, and flowers are thrown into the sea.

This is a flower from a paddle-out that drifted back to shore on a gentle tide.
