Thanks Ken, Brian and Kenny.
I've never seen bison up close except in Yellowstone- where they are often seen. And with a few million visitors per year, all the bison have grown up with people around- so we are just another part of their world.
For years the park service has drilled it into people's heads that bison are wild animals that can hurt you, and mostly the message has sunk in.
The problems arise mainly from foreign guests who mistake the calm beasts as being unusual-looking cattle, and approach too closely.
And, of course, moron Americans (who can read signs in English, and should also just know better) doing the same thing.
Bison DO kill and injure more people in Yellowstone than do any other species- but it's almost always because of people getting too close.
Many times, I've been driving and all the cars had to stop because a herd of bison was crossing the road. Nobody honked horns, or yelled, or approached them, and the beasts always have simply strolled between cars and to the other side. I even have rolled down the driver side window because they were close enough for me to smell them .
On a couple of occasions- south of Madison Jct.- big herds have used the highway as their path, and I've had to creep along for an hour until they cleared off the road and moved over to the dirt.
In places where the bison aren't so familiar with people, they probably are a bit touchy about things.
Luckily, Yellowstone isn't like that... usually.
