p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bales and Stars

Over the weekend the bales appeared on a nearby field, so I went and tried to capture them. The last week or so has been really hot here, so we usually have a clear blue sky all day. I went for the night shot, even though the heat affects the long exposure photos quite a lot. I used a 5 minute exposure for the light painting and when I loaded the photos into the Lightroom I was surprised by the lack of noise. Hopefully some of you will enjoy it. Any C&C appreciated. Thanks

Tech: Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 24-70 f2,8L, 24mm, two exposures - 5 minutes, f8, iso 200 for lightpainting, 13 seconds, f2,8, iso 3200 for stars.

I also uploaded the photo to 500px so if my website is inaccessible to some of you, please check it out here: http://500px.com/photo/41775514

It is not showing up on this site but I can see it on 500px. I like it a lot. The foreground looks great. Nice job on light painting. Wish you had more details in the sky. ( I can barely make see the milky way).

The colors are great, but I do wish the sky was a bit darker.

Great job of light painting, even way in the distance!

Hey Milan,

I really like how you lit up those bales... man that is good. So is the reason you chose 5 minutes for the exposure length because you had to light up all those bales? Personally for me for star shots, 5 mins is a no mans land as to the look of the stars. They all have some movement, so it's no longer sharp stars. And yet that haven't moved enough to actually make defined star trails. 30 secs is the max most of us are going for. Except of course if we are going for star trails themselves, and that could still be just a series of 30 sec shots, or it could be a single exposure for 20 mins or perhaps 30 mins...

Anyway, I like what you did, but the stars for me, not as much.

Jim

Thanks Harsha. Unfortunately I can't do much about the milky way. I live in a heavily populated area with many small and medium sized towns around, so the fact we are able to see see and capture at least some hints of milky way is a small miracle.

Camboman, Morris - thanks for your comments, glad you liked it. As I explained to Harsha, the sky is quite bright around here thanks to many surrounding towns. I also captured this around 10PM and the sky still had some remaining light from the sunset, so that added some brightness as well.

Jim - thanks for commenting, glad you liked my light painting effort. Yes, I made a 5 minute exposure because I wanted to use a small aperture and low iso to get the higher quality photo for printing. I could've used a single high iso shot and do the light painting very quickly, but the quality of the photo would be substantialy lower. After the longer low iso exposure, I take a high iso photo to capture the stars and combine them in photoshop. As for the 30 second exposures you usually do - the optimal time to get the stars as dots, not as trails varies with the focal lenght, so it's not always the optimal time
