p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hydrangeas

Haven't worked with flowers for a while, so I thought I'd do some shots to work on my "top view" series. I normally shoot flowers in a profile composition with the stems making a connection to the frame, but I wanted to do something a little different to see where it goes. I went with the lens stopped up on this one hoping to get a more "dream-like" effect....shot with natural light.

Thanks for looking and C & C is welcome and appreciated!

Greg

Edit: Added another shot with a deeper DoF....

Interesting experiment Greg While I do like dreamy effects all done within the camera I happen to prefer the second one this time. To me that is a real beauty of shot, well done!

I'm with Tim on this set Greg.
The second one looks like it has more light on it too to me, or maybe its just that more of the florets are in focus.

Very nice Greg. I, too, prefer the last shot. It is because it is brighter and more contrast.

#2 for me as well.

Might I ask a nooby question? How do make the bg so dark, black, in pp?

I will love to be able to take my flowers' pics (no all of them, but some) with a dark bg.

Thanks

Thanks for all the feedback and choice of #2! Much appreciated!

Eltano, I used a sheet of black velvet, hung on a wall about 4 feet behind the flowers. When you open the image in your editing software, go to the levels adjustment and use the black "eye-dropper" to set the black level. Hope this helps.

Greg- it might not surprise you to know that I prefer the second image .
But why?
Partly because of the brightness factor- but mostly because of the focus/sharpness thing.
Strictly a subjective matter- but I'm learning that I like "dreamy" flower shots only when they are super-close macro shots.
To me, the whole "OOF dreamy" thing hardly has any significance when I see images of the whole flower or a group of flowers.
Just opinion, of course.

#2 for me Greg

I think the shots with a shallower DOF need to roll of more abruptly to create the feel and effect better.

The foliage is very supporting in #2, very nice on this one buddy!
