Very high key, not exactly sure if I like it or not.

experimenting is fine but I agree with the rest, too much "high key"

i think maybe you might be able to pull something like this off if the overall composition of the photograph took up more of the frame, and perhaps created its own kind of abstract or symmetric effect. if that makes any sense.

but just due to the nature of the scene - with the horizon and the sky above a straight line - when all that stuff is completely blown out it lacks something. the "skeleton" of the image that underlies it all isn't strong enough to support the treatment or something.

another alternative that might work could be if the subject was extremely isolated, and that which was blown kind of put the subject on display. but i don't think it's happening here.

keep messing around with it. at least you're doing something different.

it's also much harder, imo, to let large parts of an image go to white than to black. i think that's just a function of how the brain reads the material or something, i dunno

An alternative crop based on goosemang's critique

i think compositionally it's stronger, as it encourages you to move around the picture a bit more. follow the jetty back, follow the shore across, back to the people. plus the closer crop allows you to see more detail of the people and shore, which is nice, and i really like the strange effect in the water right front - looks almost crystal clear or something.

this said, it's still a tough one to judge based on the really high key areas. especially online, and in my current case on a crappy monitor. due to the small details like the shore and even the people i feel like i'd want to see this larger. maybe print it out like 19" across and see how you feel about it? choice of paper would be crucial because all the really high key stuff will have some ink because there's color there, but there might not be much texture and you'd probably really notice the texture of the paper. framing will also be important because you'd have to think about the relationship between the edge of the highlight areas and the matte or frame itself - are they too close in color, etc.?

this is a tough one, and it's very different from how i'd personally handle an image so subjective processing techniques will really change how people feel about it. i'm also color blind so i can't comment on your colors

would be interested to hear what some other people think...

Print that on canvas and I think it'd work even better (the cropped version).

Thanks for the additional comments, I wish I had more data to go back to ... but the original was blown to begin with, this was an attempt to turn a sow's ear into something better ...
