p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Best Time - Glacer to Banff to Jasper

I'm planning a car camping trip starting at Glacier and going up through Banff and then Jasper and spending 3-4 days in each.

Any recommendations on best time of year for this adventure?

What about places to stay and hikes?

Thanks,
Rick

Best time in the Canadian Rockies is September, the last two weeks. Crowds are gone, scenery is great and wildlife is nice and fluffy getting ready for winter.

My wife and I took this trip a couple of years ago in July. Weather was great. Crowds were available if you wanted them, but if you were willing to hike 300 yards off the road, the crowds thinned out quickly.

Our reason for going in July was so the trip would coincide with the Calgary Stampede and Rodeo. It's not your normal hometown rodeo and it's not inexpensive, but it's a lot of fun! And you can get some pretty good shots of the rodeo action if you're lower in the grandstand. You just missed this year's Stampede.

Your hiking experience and level of endurance at altitudes is going to dictate your hiking. I tended to hike with more gear than I needed. I'd used a 28-70 most of the time. Not sure why I thought I needed to haul the 50mm, 70-200mm, etc. with me. But it all came along and never came out of the bag. (Your shooting may dictate something different).

One of the easier hikes in Glacier is "Avalanche". It's not bad and there's a great reward at the end. Unfortunately it's not a loop. It's an up and back. Nice stream on the side of the trail part of the way.

At Lake Louise it's kind of fun to hike up to the tea house for lunch or for a snack. Great views of the lake from the trail. This is a busy trail, but it thins out as you go. By the time you get to the tea house there aren't that many people.

Hike around Lake Moraine is beautiful too. This is a very easy hike. More like a walk in the park.

Have fun! I have great memories of our trip.

My vote goes for September also. We've shot the Canadian Rockies twice in September and loved the easy access to the wildlife. You have to be very careful around the elk in rut, but they seemed to be everywhere. It snowed on both trips so we had frosting on the mountaintops to make them even more picturesque. We had one of our best shooting days ever hiking around Lake O'Hara the morning after it snowed.

Our favorite places were Maligne Lake and Spirit Island in Jasper, the bighorn sheep just east of Saskatchewan Crossing, Moraine Lake in Banff, Emerald Lake, Peyto Lake, and the hike to Stanley Falls.

You will have no trouble finding subjects to photograph. Good shooting and have a great trip!
