p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Question about the 70D Multiple Exporusre Mode

I am reading about the 70D and came across this statement:

Multiple Exposure mode allows you to create a completely unique work of art by combining 2-9 different images.

While reading the User's Manual for the 70D, pages 175-181, where it explains the process, I was wondering, is it possible to create an HDR image using this functionality?

From what I understand the built-in HDR function produces a JPEG image, but the Multiple Exposure function can produce a RAW image.

Is my understanding of this way off?

Thanks and regards.....Pete

If you have multiple bracketed exposures, you can process them into an 'HDR' image. I used Magic Lantern for this on my 60D, but I believe most Canon cameras can do this through Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB).

The multiple exposure mode, won't do HDR, it's not designed for that. The HDR mode produces and in camera jpg, but at least on the 5D III, it also saves the original 3 RAW files used to produce the HDR, so you can make your own HDR in software later. You can also use AEB bracketing and take up to 7 (on 5D III) shots. I've been using the in camera HDR mode more often lately and it's pretty good when you are stuck without a tripod.

Thanks for the replies....

Pixel, my perception of HDR must be incorrect then, but isn't HDR combining multiple exposures into a single picture.

Have a look at the screen shot of the manual I've added and the explanation under Additive, isn't that the same thing?

Oh, and on the 70D only the final image is saved, the images used to create the Multiple Exposure are not saved....Bazinga!

Thanks and regards....Pete

HDR is neither a simply additive or average process. HDR is far more complex and needs images taken at different exposure values. It analyzes the image pixel by pixel to assign a correct scaling of it's intensity.

Great responses based on the 5D III, but AFAIK the camera isn't available yet so it's hard for people to answer the question if no-one has used it. Maybe we're behind in Australia?

p.1 #8 · p.1 #8 · Question about the 70D Multiple Exporusre Mode

The multiple exposure mode is typically used to create one picture with multiple frames superimposed. Think of a pitcher shot at 10 fps with several positions of his motion captured in one picture.

Since you are combining multiple shots, you need to underexpose every frame so when added they are at the right overall exposure. That's what the manual is explaining, and why the amount of underexposure is different depending on how many shots you take.

Yep. I was just gonna say this...multiple exposure mode is for image blending in camera. With the idea being an outcome something like this

I'm sure there are ways to use it to make HDR images, but, to get good HDR images, in camera blending is not usually ideal. Much more nuance to it

It wont do hdr as all the exposures are the same. The result would be similar to one longer exposure unless something moves

Ah, I get it now. The pitcher analogy was a very good explanation.

Thanks
