p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sunrise over Rebmann glacier on Kilimanjaro

I visited Africa for two weeks recently, the first half of which was spent climbing Kilimanjaro.

I've never been much of a landscape guy but I did try some as we hiked. This was captured on summit day, right on the peak and overlooking the largest glacier on Kilimanjaro - Rebmann glacier - as the sun rose. Given other circumstances, I would experimented more and used a tripod, but the more experienced guides try and prevent too much lingering on the low oxygen, and very cold, summit.

Shot handheld, on the walk up to Uhuru, with a Nikon D7100 and Sigma 10-20mm, at 10mm, f/8, 1/25th & ISO200.

Thoughts and criticisms very welcome since I'm not that experienced with landscapes.

I like it. Nice, even exposure and good composition. I'd love to see more pics from the summit.

Beautiful.
I like it as is.
You could crop a bit more from the bottom, more pano, see if you like it.
I'd love to see more.
Just came back from TZ myself, two months ago, and I welcome seeing more images.
Did you add in safari?
Who did you use for the tour?
How was the "hike"?
Scott

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Nick - I'll post a couple more when I get home from work.

Scott - I'll try a pano crop, that might be interesting. We did a 5 day safari after the 8 day hike. Both were spectacular! The hike was outstanding, we took the longest route - Lemosho - because we wanted to see more of the mountain. Lemosho winds through the western rainforest and hits all of the major climate zones on the mountain. Summit day was cold but the weather was beautiful for the entire trip.

The local company is called The African Walking Company, booked through their US representatives Peak Planet. I highly recommend them; Peak Planet was very patient and knowledgeable in answering the myriad of questions we had, and the employees from TAWC were really great. Our hike guides knew a ton about botany, geology, history & wildlife. Also, I had mentioned in passing to Peak Planet that I was interested in birds and they arranged for our safari guide to be an absolute wealth of local bird knowledge.

Nice shot and sounds like a great trip.

I would agree with cropping a tad off the bottom to really finish the photo.

Thanks for the info on the group too.

Much much better I think.

How do you feel about it?

Dang BV, that's a really cool image! I really like the layered tones above the glacial textures. I've spent a lot of time viewing the mountain from the north, but have never climbed it....someday I hope!

I had mixed feelings, but it's grown on me after looking a few times... I think I will get it printed in the crop ratio.

Thanks Jim! I highly recommend the climb, it was a lot of fun.

A few more from the summit... again, welcoming all feedback since it would help me learn:

The shadow of Kilimanjaro over the valley, and Mt. Meru:

I'm usually not a fan of lens flares in images, just tried this as an experiment:

Rebmann Glacier, and Mwenzi Peak (the second highest peak of Kilimanjaro):

Jambo, Jambo!
Glad you are liking the cropped version. I think it strengthens an already fine image. I might take just a sliver off the second pano. The triangular geometries of the distant peaks are interesting features complementing the glacier and headwall.
Last two are well-done but do not create the same Wow.
Only time we saw Kilimanjaro was early evening on our way back to the airport. But the sunset was hitting it. Damn, the cameras were packed away!

The sunburst looks fine to me

I like 'em all. That shadow is crazy though...a huge mountain shadow. Now I've got to get there to see that for myself.

Thanks Scott. It's funny, we climbed the mountain, but only actually got to see the whole thing on the way back to the airport, like you. The clouds were completely clear for the entire climb, but as soon as we left the mountain, it got socked in with clouds and we didn't see it until the last 20 minute drive to the airport.

Isn't it amazing? I took about 20 shots of it, and was just fascinated... I mean, of course a huge mountain casts a shadow. That makes sense. But who usually gets to see it like that?

I think these are all truly stunning, you must have very steady hands! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Sharona! 10mm really allows for some absurdly low shutter speeds - and I usually snap off several shots to make sure one is steady.

Funny, I loved the first picture, but thought it might be better yet with some cropping of the bottom. But when you did it, somehow I like it less than the original. A milder crop works best for me.
And the other three pics are also compelling, especially the first two IMHO. The third one might be better with some foreground cropping...

Hey BV, had to come back and comment on the mother of all shadows....that is awesome...that friggen shadow is delaying the morning sun all the way to Rwanda. Mount Meru looks like mole hill...crazy stuff seen from the top of the continent.

Thanks for adding the pics!

Thanks. My current "working" version (I'm getting some help in the Critique forum) is a little bit less of a crop, though not by much:

Crazy, huh? Meru is almost 15k ft. and it looks like... well, as you said, a mole hill. Thanks for the comment!
