That's a very good question Tim, here's my understanding of the history behind this (if anyone knows better then please do correct me!). Not so many years ago red kites were close to extinction in the UK, however there was a small population left in Wales. The farmer at Gigrin established a kite feeding station with the hope of helping out the local population. There were other conservation measures put in place too and together these have had a very positive impact on the Welsh kite population. Simultaneously kites have been released into other areas of the UK and the species has made a really terrific come back as a result.
Today there is probably no sound conservation reason to continue to operate the feeding station at Gigrin however the spectacular up close display that is a provided there brings a lot of interest from people who might not normally be interested in birds or conservation. The Welsh Kite trust provide links to Gigrin Farm's website from their own site and so are providing a tacit endorsement of the feeding station.
