This has a painterly quality and mood to it that I find engaging. I don't know if that is representative of Ruskin or not, but it certainly suggest the impression an artist might have of these woods while perambulating the grounds. And on this day, you were that artist!
The only suggestion I might have would be too lighten the clump of fiddleheads a bit, while slightly darkening the bright patch on the ground. That might draw a little more attention to the ferns and then lead into the trees in the background. The light on the ground helps with the dappled mood, but since there is nothing there to look at, I'd deemphasize that a bit.
