p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Quiet Woods On An Overcast Day

In May my wife and I enjoyed a day at Brantwood, the one-time home of the Englishman John Ruskin, a prolific writer and artist whose views (and art) remain relevant and fresh today. The gardens, which encircle the house and outbuildings, are my favorite area of the estate.

This has a painterly quality and mood to it that I find engaging. I don't know if that is representative of Ruskin or not, but it certainly suggest the impression an artist might have of these woods while perambulating the grounds. And on this day, you were that artist!

The only suggestion I might have would be too lighten the clump of fiddleheads a bit, while slightly darkening the bright patch on the ground. That might draw a little more attention to the ferns and then lead into the trees in the background. The light on the ground helps with the dappled mood, but since there is nothing there to look at, I'd deemphasize that a bit.

I agree with Dave, this picture looks very much like an old painting. Taking good-looking pictures of the woods is pretty hard, but yours is very nice and well structured.

Hey Bill,

That is a nice wooded scene. Dave gave a great suggestion, I think those slight touchs would enhance the shot nicely.

Very painterly, is that mostly a processing thing, or was that just the quality of the light?

Thanks for everyone's comments. The scene does have a bit more spice viewed larger and not on the Web; very subtle.

Andy, I warmed it maybe 5% with Viveza, and used good ol' burning and dodging elsewhere, mostly on mid-tones. That was it. Processed through Photo Ninja to CS5.

Beautiful and spooky at the same time. I like it.
