Long ago in Tokyo.
The little girl is learning something about how the religious monks get the where-with-all to support their monasteries. The old monk probably can't do many of the regular monastery "chores," but he is helping out.
In the Japanese culture this is not "begging"- nor is it in other east-Asian countries.
It's just a part of their society and has been for a very long time.

I really admire how highly the Japanese and most Asian cultures respect their elderly- it would be great to see more of that in the US.

I agree about how east Asian countries respect the elderly. And why not? They have a lifetime of experience.
Funny how most people in the US under the age of thirty assume old people know nothing worth hearing.
Well, the older I get- I guess it's NOT very funny
