p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Where to go for northern lights?

I am unfortunately turning 30 in January, and it seems like a good opportunity to escape for a few days. I've always wanted to photograph the northern lights, and am investigating this as an option.

I am in the UK, and would like this to be a somewhat economical trip, so please take that into account!

This will be for late January, very early February.

Does anyone have any thoughts on locations and companies to use for tours?

Thanks

It looks like the main choices will be the nordic countries, so Iceland, Norway, Sweden or Finland. Ideally i'm looking for advice from anyone that's been to any of these and can try and help me choice which to go for!

I'm somewhat less tempted by Iceland because it's a country i've already visited.

I've looked at one for Sweden and it mentions -35c temperatures. That's somewhat cold What is the operating window of a 5dmk2!?!

Hey Anzxio,

One thing I have seen is that Aurora color and cold weather go hand in hand... You aren't shooting the Aurora from the Bahama's...

Be sure to have extra batteries, keep the batteries in pockets underneather your winter jacket so that your body heat will keep the batteries warm. More so than the camera, your biggest issue will be your batteries dying.

My favorite spot is Dawson City Yukon. From the top of Dome Mountain. In september the days get longer.

It costs $500 to fly return from Calgary and 6 hours to drive north.

I have run my 5dii at -38c. It groans as it takes pictures but it still works and the batteries die quickly. I suggest the hot-shots ( chemical heating pads you buy for skiing) and a touque/scarf around the camera. The hardest part of shooting at this temperature is that you have to be careful not to breath near the camera or it gets coated with ice and its hard to remove. The heating pads don't heat it up much but 10 degrees makes a big difference.
