OK, not my actual very 1st, but better than a test image!
I headed out to Garrapata, south of Carmel expecting good weather. Turned overcast by the time I got there.
The color was so flat, I pulled out some B&W film (very OLD Ilford).
There's a bit more grain than I would like, due to age. Still working on the details & the dirt. Scanning is still a challenge but its still fun.
Toyo 45A, Nikkor 150, f32, 1/8 sec. and a little tilt
As with all things new, it is a start, so enjoy the process. The comp is good, along with the exposure, but a flat scene for sure. I don't think contrast filters would do much. The tilt & f32 worked to keep the foreground sharp, so you're good there.
I think it all worked for you under the conditions, now go back on a better day with the experience learned!
BTW: What are you scanning with (flatbed?), and processing the neg's in (tanks-tray)?
Edd,
Thanks for the comments. I try to have a plan when I go out for a shoot & this was the case.
I visit the coast often so the weather is never a given
Negs sent a lab for now to get started but that will have to change @ $5 ea.
I picked up a Jobo tank system that I will try soon
Scanned with an Epson 4990
Good for you Dan for using that 4x5. You probably know I do the same. The overcast provided a nice easy range of tonalities to work with and that great look of BW neg material. The film can capture more tones of gray and so the rocks here do not look anything like a digital camera would do. It looks like you can pull a lot more texture out of that sky with a bit of PS.
You could crop off the distracting branches at the bottom.
Love the shot, Dan- flat light notwithstanding.
I don't understand the "streaking" between the two rocks and the splashing waves, though. Probably because I've never seen an image that had it like this .
Charlie
Jeffrey, yes I remember you comments about B&W film too! I still want to do this site in color.
Tried to pull more out of the sky but it was pretty flat to the eye. Next time might put a filter on it.
Chris, I chose this location more for the scene elements, especially in better light, but am all to familiar with the ocean's energy here Also, paid attention to how much warning I would get on wave size & breatking.
Charlie, sometimes you just take the light you get. The "streaking" effects are pretty common when the surf breaks here and the spray is comin' at ya. I love this cove for several reasons, stacks, rocks, surrounding bluffs. But there are a couple of unique things about this area that let you really feel the ocean. This area of rocks is more like a berm and allows you to get pretty close when it breaks big. The waves were maybe 50ft or less away. Someday I will get splashed The other is the sounds the rocks make when the water recedes.
Tom/Klaus, I am reasonably satisfied with my 1st legit image, other than test shots of a building in good light. Still much to work on and consistency.
