Hi Jude,

I use the lens (OS non-sport version) but I have Sigma TC's rather than the Canon you mention. Virtually all of the bird shots that I've posted on the N&W forum recently have been shot with this lens either bare, with the 1.4x or 2x TC.

Let me know via PM if you have any specific questions I might be able to answer.

Some examples:

Canon 7D, 1/250s f/5.0 at 420.0mm iso200 (Sigma 1.4x TC)

Canon 7D, 1/200s f/5.0 at 420.0mm iso200 (Sigma 1.4x TC, heavy crop)
http://m2.i.pbase.com/o9/11/572611/1/150977392.2piwE7A3.LittleOwl9333.JPG

Canon 7D, 1/640s f/7.1 at 420.0mm iso250 (Sigma 1.4x TC)
http://m8.i.pbase.com/o2/11/572611/1/140689498.xSqR3XOr.IndianRoller3867.JPG

Canon 7D, 1/640s f/4.0 at 420.0mm iso500 (Sigma 1.4x TC)
http://m1.i.pbase.com/o2/11/572611/1/140645441.nrNYbLKG.Tigersidelitheadshot2540.JPG

and one with the 2x TC:

Canon 7D, 1/400s f/7.1 at 600.0mm iso800 (Sigma 2x TC)

I love this lens for wildlife, especially for birds. I use the lens with the sigma ago 1.4x or 2.0x tc's.

Jude,

All of the images in the "Kansas City Zoo" photos on this forum were from my non OS 120-300 Siggy. Some with the Sigma 2x and some bare.

I'm just getting used to it and just (in the last two or three weeks) getting into photography again after a 20+ year layoff. I think the lens will be killer in the hands of a more skilled person than I!

Hi Paul, great to hear that you are using this lens and thanks for sharing your pictures with exif info as well. I am thinking of this lens as it is bit affordable than other long lenses and it would have added advantage over shooting large wild animals in low light.

Thanks once again,

Jude

Thanks Charles for the very nice captures. Is there a heavy lag in AF when it is coming to birds in flight when using TCs.?

Jude, I don't do too much BIF personally, I usually go for the small birdies on branches. I find they move quick enough, and this lens locks on very fast.

I've only had it for about a month, and I've been meaning to do some BIF tests soon. I can pm you once I have some results.

That would be great Charles. Let me know your thoughts once you do some testing on BIFs. Thanks once again.

I find the Sigma to 'search' some while focusing... exactly as you'd expect. Much more so with the 2x TC than at 300mm bare.

Overall, for the money (I can't even think of affording a Canon 300 2.8 lens) it is an awesome piece of glass. If you can get the latest edition, I'm sure it is better than the one I have!

Good luck!

Good to see, know how well this lens performs.
I am curious to learn more about the pairing with the Sigma 2x tele.
For folks using this, pretty much tripod use?

I use it exclusively handheld and maybe a little monopod use.

Hi Scott,

Regardless of TCs I prefer to use a monopod with this lens because of the weight - it can be hard work handholding it for extended periods (at least it is for me!). Most of the shots I've taken with the 2x TC have been taken from a monopod or other support (e.g. resting on a window ledge in a hide for instance).

Tomorrow I'll be shooting red kites in flight with it handheld for a two hour stretch, I'll have to take a few breaks in that time to give my arms a rest!

Paul.
