so I decided since I finally got an L lens at 2.8 to give lighting bugs at night a chance.

I set the camera to Bulb and 2.8, ISO 100

and took 30+ images and this one is the best, that said its not really anything im proud of, its grainy and there is ofcourse trails, anyone have tricks for shooting in really dark scenario except ofcourse buying better equipment

I caught one and showed in in a shot glass and snapped a picture with same settings as above, pretty neat but not winning any awards....

I've never seen a lightning bug, but I would crank up the ISO and increase the shutter speed.

Cool experiment I would second upping the ISO and exposing correctly to minimize the noise

You won't get a sharp image of anything moving with a 20sec exposure.
I agree on moving up the ISO for a starter. That would cut that exposure down to 10sec which is still going to leave a trail or blur.

Maybe you shoot them a bit earlier when they are lighting up or try a few flash firings during your exposure. You could also try a led flashlight on a static subject to illuminate the body slightly to give detail, when the phosphorous glow goes off it will be brighter and a different color and you might get your shot!

That is a challenge, good luck.

These are so cool... keep experimenting and I'm sure you'll end up with some amazing shots.
