The second one flew into a tree right by where I was standing...gave me this look like, "oh great...another photographer," then pretty much ignored me. I didn't bother sticking around though...took a few shots and left.
When I arrived at the eagle habitat at the Queens Zoo January 4, 2003 the eagles were not visible. I guessed that they were hiding someplace so I climbed up the fence next to their habitat and found Clare with Mel lying in her pap in their nest. Both are rescue eagles. Clare was hit by a shotgun blast while flying over Long Island in 1960 and suffered wing damage preventing her from ever flying again. Mel was a chick and just learning to fly when he was caught in the wake turbulence of a 747 landing at JFK and this broke his wing. He can fly very short distances though he can’t seem to get any altitude. When I saw this post for a special day for eagles this unique photo came to mind.
