p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Poison ivy?

Hi folks!

I'm a frequenter on the wedding board. Had a quick question and thought some folks here may know. We just purchased our first home last fall. I got some bad poison ivy/oak that lasted a week. I can't seem to track it down in our yard. It all began after a long Sunday of mowing and clearing the yard and doing some landscaping in the front.

Can anyone identify this plant? is it poison ivy or poison oak? Thank you in advance!

Here is a good site to help you identify poison ivy. http://birdandmoon.com/poisonivy/

Doesn't look like anything bad. Looks a heck of a lot like a dogwood.

As a kid I was taught "leaflets three, let it be".

Leaves of three, leave 'em be. Leaves of four, eat some more.
Always in groups of three. Usually oval leaves with smooth edges and a pointy tip. Sometimes the edges can be jagged. Usually slightly waxy looking surface.

Look for a vine traveling up a shed or a tree trunk Greg for you poison ivy along with the identifying 3-leaf grouping. The stem is rather fiberous for gripping as it travels.

Other thought, do you have a cat or a dog as they can easily carry it from having rubbed on it in the woods. It can also be air born if someone was burning it and that can be bad if you get it internally!

Take care..

Does not look like it to me. Just lightly touch with back of a finger and you will know.

I do have two cats and they're always out in the yard. I think we found it this morning, couple poison ivys growing on the side of the house up the water drain. It's near our new hydrangea plants that I was watering so it must have been the one! All taken care of, thanks everyone!

Becareful if your cats are out and about.... they can bring the oil in on their fur and create an itchy situation for you.

I have had a great deal of experience with poison ivy. This does not have the look of poison ivy, no three leaflets per leaf, no sometime shine on the surface, not growing as a vine as it gets larger, and finally the leaf shape would be weird for PI. Yours is similar in that poison ivy can have a red stem and has an alternate leaf attachment. That being said poison ivy can have many looks that can fool you, however, I feel with high probability that this is not.

Congratulations on your new home. If you are over the rash in a week you did not have bad PI. A bad bout involves oozing skin and can last a month or more. If you do get PI on you, was it off with diluted Clorox and then with soap and water. There is something about chlorine that seems to stop it from effecting people.

Morris is right about chlorine chemicals being helpful against PI. It works best right after exposure where it tends to take off a small layer of skin cells that have the PI oils attached which then can be washed away. Comet Cleanser works about as well as Clorox and is easier to manage.

There are other plants that also cause poison-ivy type rashes. For example, poison sumac grows in your area. You mention clearing vegetation: the sap of some plants, such as those in the Euphorbiaceae family, also produce skin rashes.
