Bryan at digital-picture.com just posted his impressions on the new Canon 200-400mm f/4L.
Here is an excerpt:
"You can cross bad image quality off of your list of potential reasons to not get the new Canon EF 200-400mm f/4 L IS USM Ext 1.4x Lens. Because this lens totally rocks in that regard. Image quality results from the 200-400mm f/4 L IS Lens are now available on the site. These are among the best results I've ever seen from a zoom lens - or from any lens."
Image quality results from a second Canon EF 200-400mm f/4 L IS USM 1.4x Lens are now available on his site. The second lens' results are displayed as sample "3" and "4".

Well, for $12,000. it better be the absolute best, I mean who would be willing to pay $12,000. for it if it was only average or questionable? Even as it is only a very small percentage of photographers out there are going to purchase this lens.

Dan
Hood not included?
When I look at the lens I don't see an excellent zoom of odd range; rather a 1Ds III, 100-400L, 70-200L II, 300 2.8L, 85 1.2L, and a decent car to haul them around in.

Looks like an external extender may do a better job than the integrated one. This surprises me. The bare lens gives the MkII primes a run for their money which is quite an achievement.

Very impressive image quality. The sharpness of this lens with the 1.4x on or even 1.4x x 1.4x is impressive. I expected the 1.4x internal to be better than and external 1.4x but they seem pretty even. But still impressive and the not having to screw the external on makes up for even.

Exactomondo.
In breaking news the worlds most expensive zoom is the worlds best zoom, in other news the a bear took a shit in the woods today.

Gentlemen, it's supply and demand. If we somehow give Canon the perception that they need to increase supply and then later give the perception that demand is low, they would need to decrease the price. It's that simple. The other way is for everyone to buy one and return it. Then we have a ton of refurbs.

Nice to know. Now Canon is the manufacturer of the best 70-200 AND 200-400 IS lenses.
I just do not understand why they did not the same on the 24-70 4.0 IS. I do not think it is to "cheap" ...

I purchased a 500 F4 10 years ago. It is worth more today than when I purchased it new. Adjusting for inflation and cost of money, might have cost me a few hundred dollars to own the lens for 10 years. Less than renting for a week a year.
If the 200-400 holds its value just as well, why not
