Very nice pictures! I went to the one in Portland in April for the first time is 2013 but the lighting was terrible. Glad you got lucky.

Hi Ron,

I really like the first one, the use of depth of field is wonderful.
The waterfall (#4 I think): is the waterfall the subject? I feel a bit lost in this one with the bright foliage, it draws my attention from a darker but beautiful waterfall...
The bridge: I discovered this just now quite by accident. Look at it as a pano, cutting off 1/3 to 1/2 of the top. What do you think? I think it becomes much stronger...

Cheers,
Paul

Hey Paul,
Thanks for your thoughts on these. I still struggle a bit with composition and subject, so any suggestions are much appreciated. I think I do like the bridge picture as you suggest and will make some changes there. The was some fairly strong CA in that photo up in the trees and your idea will eliminate that!

Thanks, Ron

Hey Ron,

Some nice shots here, some nice creativity with them. I think #3 would be my favorite, I like the composition. In addition to the previous thoughts on it, I would lighten up the shadows on the right side of it in that pine tree. The composition looks pretty good, and I wouldn't pull any more shadow detail from the background, but just that right side as it's in front of the composition.

Some little thoughts for you. In #5, if you had moved slightly so that there wasn't a trunk of a tree coming out of the top of that ball. Some shots like this you want to use the same frame of thought as portrait shots, you really want to watch lines or things poking out in the background from someones head. In this case the head of that cool post.

#4 brighten the shadows, darken the highlights and try to get the waterfall areas the brightest (but not blown out) on the shot.

I like the left side of #2, you captured those leaves nicely. But towards the middle right, there is a shadow that drops down on the leaves on that side and makes the shot feel unbalanced. If you could compose maybe tighter or different so that there were no shadows on the leaves, but the background itself was in shadow and darker than the leaves...

Good work though, it's locations like these that really help us I think mentally process our shots and grow from what we see.

Jim
