Ever have one of those "why the hell didn't I know about this sooner" moments? I had one of those yesterday when I was sitting beneath the massive north face of Mount Baring along the shores of Barclay Lake in the Washington Cascades. This was my second trip up here; first time was a year ago but with 3-4 feet of snow still on the ground and pretty blah conditions in general, and it's amazing what a difference a couple months will make. It was still a little early for flowers and ferns, but I don't think I've ever gotten anything this good in the Cascades this early in the year before, so I really can't complain. This is also an excellent spot in the autumn, so I figure I'll be going back at least one more time this year, and probably pretty frequently in subsequent years too.

Nikon D600 + 16-35 VR @ 18mm, f/11. ISO 100, 3-sec, grads.

Hey Brian,

Wow... how cool of a shot! Love the light on Mt Baring, and the way it's poking through the clouds. The foreground is sweet with the water movement too, it really makes for a place I know I would want to go back to again and again.

Wow, very nice, the little hint of the peak in the sky is great, while you can't see the whole formation, you know its there, and you know its big...I like it.

Beautiful. The peek-a-boo peak is wonderful, especially with the little hints of light making the clouds glow in all the right places. The composition has a really nice upward flow. Nice job.

Hi Bryan,

I have been up there several times. But, it has been a few years since my last visit.

You have a real beauty here. I like the POV. Water, Mountain, cloud layer. It doesn't get much better than that. Nice work.

Have you ever gone past Barclay Lake on up to Eagle lake?

Never been up to Eagle, hasn't ever really interested me in the past - in fact not much in the immediate Highway 2 corridor has really, though I do need to spend more time on Scorpion Mountain and West Cady Ridge. I have been eyeballing a composition from not too far above the saddle between Merchant Peak and Mount Townsend looking west at Merchant and Gunn - looks like it could be a pretty epic comp under the right lighting. So I may have to head up towards Eagle this year to check it out, but if / when I do I'll most likely go in from the Eagle Creek side rather than via Barclay (significantly shorter).
