After dabbling with expensive rental 70-200mm lenses I went back to my good old 70-300mm VR I got years ago for $200 or so on ebay. Most of the time I use these lenses for panning at f/11 or smaller aperture, so the AF isn't very important, and most of the other flaws are reduced. The VR on it is quite good at helping with these pans, although there's plenty of room for improvement. And when it got dark, I had nothing to shoot with. MF was impossible to focus, and my only other fast AF lens was too long for most shots. But in daylight, this thing is good enough to get the occasional crisp pan - maybe 5% keeper rate
