Hi everyone,

My family is planning a trip to Scotland this August, and we're going to see the Edinburgh Tattoo (finally!)

I noticed that they have a no tripod policy (reasonably so), but am wondering if anyone had experiences there, and know if they'd allow monopods, or larger lenses.

Thanks!
Dex

Don't have an answer for you but this photo blogger is out of Edinburgh. Try shooting him an email.

No tripods and no monopods at all, seats are very cramped together so anything longer than a 70-200 may be ill advised. Been there for the least 3 tatoos. Ejoy your time and bring a poncho. Ask away if you got any q's

Thanks, Guari.
I believe I have an end-of-isle seat, so I'll have a little more elbow room... I'm thinking about taking the Sigma 120-300 for the tattoo, and a wide angle for the venue...

What type of lenses do you think are most useful? I'll have seats fairly close to the stage floor... Third row up right at the bend of section 10...

Also, while we're at it... What about walking around the Royal Mile? I'm thinking of a 24/1.4 or 14/24, and maybe just bring the 24-120VR...

(I'll probably make another post later on, asking for photo site suggestions around Scotland... my wife planned the route we're going to take)

Thanks!

Hi Dex,

I'll search through my lightroom and see a bit on the FL's I shot at.

First time I was there I used a D300 with a 18-200. It was a bit on the slow side as I don't like pushing iso's much due to noise. And it's a slowish lens. I haven't taken the camera for the next two tatoos, mea culpa.

Try not to bring too big a bag. I haven't gotten used to it yet, but seats in scotland are cramped together. Churches, tatoo, cinemas, you call it. Your knees will hit the edge of the seat in front of you. Too big a bag and you'll be unconfy for sure.

There are usually two tattoo slots. The early one still has a lot of light as days will be long, the second one will be in dusk to darkness. The later one is better as they have good fireworks.

It really depends on what gear you already have. It can be shot with a one lens zoom a la 28-300 but a better lens will surely help. The 24-120 and the 120-300 would cover all your bases for sure. The tattoo is very dynamic and having a zoom really helps, as you can't move. You will be far enough as to prevent doing headshots and such. Your seats are great.

I'll double check with the pics

Thanks, Guari. We have tickets for the 9pm showing... so that should be nice!

If I will not be allowed to use a monopod, I guess I'll have a bag on my lap to rest my elbow and lens on! Initially, I was going to have the monopod either on the floor or on the seat, between my legs... just to take the weight of the lens off. Guess I won't be bringing a monopod anymore! (I will be bringing a series-2 tripod tho)

Hi Dex,

You <may> be allowed a monopod; they might let you, maybe not. I can't say. As long as it is small and not easy to spot maybe they won't see it and you'll be able to get it through. What I meant to say is you will not have enough space to use it. I would not consider it at all, it wont fit.

I hope you have a great trip. Let me know if I can help, though I'm sure there's other people with plenty of advice for Scotland!

Hey Gauri,

No, I certainly appreciate the insight... if it's pointless to have a monopod there due to space limitations, then I'll skip the monopod altogether, saving me some luggage space for other stuff! I've done the "backpack on my lap" as a support many times in the past, so that'll have to do

I have a threat over in the landscaping forum.. with our itinerary up, so if you have time, please stop over to that threat and see if you can drop me some additional recommendations!

Yes, I saw that thread but decided that I should give no advice as David's and the others is as good as it gets. Skye is beautiful but I see you have it for your next trip

You will not be disappointed by your choice of locations and David's advice. I would consider passing by Oban as it is somehow near your route. There are some beautiful spots in the NW Highlands, an area you won't be visiting. Maybe for your next trip!
