p.1 #1 · XE1 - Lessons Learned

Today I had to shoot a military retirement, so I took along my XE1, 35/1.4 and my 5D3 with 40/2.8 as a second camera. I wasn't sure how well the Fuji would hold up to focusing in an unknown location (never visited before), and this was my first event shooting with the XE1.

1) Camera focused fine This was a relief to me. Granted, the place ended up not really being a cave, but it was dark enough that it had me worried. Granted, this was a retirement and involved no processions, etc, but I rarely had a misfocus. I *did* cheat a little by enlarging the AF box by one step. Focus for the most part was enjoyable.

2) That wee little flash is pretty nice for fill. I was a bit bummed that it only goes to -2/3 EV, but that seemed to be just enough for what I needed, maybe a smidgen too much but oh well. Granted, I would have preferred bounced fill, but not the weight and bulk involved with one.

3) So *that's* why Fuji hoods are tapered...no flash shadows at longer distances! (hey, I was wondering!)

4) I need to stop being afraid of higher ISOs - For the most part of the shooting, I was in manual ISO 800, f/1.4, 1/125s shutter. I really should have stopped down to maybe f/2 and kept the ISO 800 1/125s. Shadow raising (which I didn't need, see next point) is ridiculously easy. ISO 1600 looks great. Now I know.

5) The Fuji doesn't fear highlights...at all. You know how some cameras are psychotically afraid of clipping highlights? (hello there, Sony A850). Not this sucker -- At my above settings, I was actually slightly OVER exposing, even though the camera meter was trying to tell me I was at -2EV. I could have gone slower and been fine.

6) Get the freakin' white balance correct because the JPEGs are very usable -- I mean, I knew I liked Fuji's jpegs anyway, but in this particular instance, I really wished I would have tried to match up WB better.

Granted, I was in a very difficult lighting scenario. Front of stage, incandescent cans. Rest of room, brighter fluorescent. Pop-up flash added to the mix. It was rough.

The actual "look" of the JPEGs, though, was great, nice toning (using STD and Shadows -1, NR -1), great contrast curve...I would have been perfectly happy to use the JPEGs SOOC had I gotten the WB correct.

Anyway, here are a few samples. I took plenty with the 5D3, and I did tend to love the extra "ooph" the FF brought to the table (last photo is 5D3), but the Fuji was certainly up to this task.

Nice! Re white-balance etc. - you know you can process raws in-camera? So if you shoot both raw + jpg, you're pretty safe should the original jpgs not turn out well, you can just adjust things in-camera and make new jpgs.

looks good
in theory you should use a coloured gel on on the flash to match temperature, but it doesnt look like it was needed

Yes true but in this case I had such a multitude of shots it would have been infeasible. Great point though, I have already used RAW in camera to great effects.

Don't let my post work fool you! I did a lot of selective editing, including temperature brush, as some of the faces were just a bit off.

^to be honest I find this post work easier than fiddling with gels
but sometimes in extreme conditions they are the only hope

there was also a guy who was using them artistically, if I remember where the link is I'll post it... if I understood correctly he was using incandescent film and strong orange gels on his strobes.
imagine a blue field in the background with red people in the foreground

Thanks for posting your experience. I'll probably get an X-E1 (or X-Pro 2) later this year, to go with my X-Pro 1 and X100.

Nicely done, they look great.

Type of work I'd normally use, and assume the results were from, a camera like a Canon 1 series or Nikon D3, with speed and fast glass.

Surprising how capable smaller cameras have become

Nice work. I sold my XE-1 a few months ago and miss it. I would have kept it if I wasn't in need of funds for my F6 that i just had to have.

For me, the XE-1 focused fast enough in most situations, but I just didn't like the lag compared to an SLR. 99% of the time, it wasn't an issue and was more of a feel that I just couldn't get used to. Having said that, the files were just as good as anything I can pull out of my D700 with good lenses! I only had the 35mm f/1.4 on the XE-1 and I was set to buy the 14mm just before I sold it. Fuji is the one mirrorless, I would love to buy again just for the lovely files that it produces.

Brace to shoot this with the Fuji. I agree, it can pull it off-- but I'd be so much more comfortable, purely on an AF basis, with my 5D2 in this situation.

Regarding high ISO: This is the first camera I've been comfortable shooting at 6400, albeit carefully exposed and processed. And with the caveat that apparently the sensitivity is a bit overstated by Fuji.

Good stuff.

Got to admit I'm impressed with the results. I've wondered how well the Fujis would do at "general PJ" work as their smaller form factor would be nice. Interesting.

Unconnected to photography and I'm showing my age here, but hard to image a formal dress occasion in "camo fatigues." Guess things have changed Also, was the baseball bat a threat or a promise?

Thanks, and yeah for something not too fast paced the Fuji works pretty well.

As for the attire, it is a formal occasion but is up to the retiree as to the dress...I have seen plenty of both types (ABUs or service dress).

The bat is a gift from one of our work sections called the 'STIC'
