I am in school and have a free today on Tuesday, June 11th. Yosemite is about 1.5 hours from where I am staying, so I am going to drive up and stay for the day to hike and photograph sunset.
Because I have only one day, what do you guys recommend? I think I would like to shoot the tunnel view as sunset, what should I know for that? Are there any hikes that allow for midday shooting?

Drive up early if you can. Not so much for a sunrise but the early morning light as the sun breaks over the ridges to the East. I like visiting Valley View (Gates of the Valley) in the AM as the light hits El Capitan.
I like to hike along the trail that follows the Merced.
One place to start on the trail is at Swinging Bridge. Just before the bridge there often are flooded areas this time of year that offer great reflections. After you go over the bridge, the trail is to right. There are a few spots along the way that give you views/reflections.
There are some other trail entries near the entrance to the park as well.
Then of course Tunnel View at sunset. if the weather/clouds cooperate.

I just couldn't help myself and will be staying overnight at White Chief Mountain Lodge. This will give me an additional sunrise and full day of hiking.
I think I for sure want to do the Swinging Bridge trail and the Cook's Meadow Loop.

Tunnel view has been photograph a million time (myself included ) by everyone, try driving up highway 120. Road should be nice and clear during this time. The back country is where the real Yosemite is at in my opinion. Have fun!

Your question brings up the old story that people tell about a Yosemite ranger (in most versions) and a visitor to the Valley. It goes something like this:
Visitor: I'm only able to be here in the Valley for one day. What should I do?
